Cape May Surf Lessons – Frequently Asked Questions

No experience needed. Perfect for beginners or surfers looking to gain a little bit more confidence.

Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and water. Be sure to have your sunscreen on and be ready for your lesson start time.

Wear a bathing suit that is appropriate for surfing. Something that will stay on and not impede your paddling abilities. Rashguards (aka sun shirts) are also a good idea, but not required.

As long as your surfer is 8+ years old, you're good to go! Lessons are perfect for both kids and adults and we often have a fairly even mix of ages. From family groups (yes...even grandparents) to individuals, we've been teaching all ages for decades.

Cancellations made less than (4) full days ahead of your reserved surf lesson, including no-shows, will not be refunded and will be charged the full amount of the lesson and rental. Cancellations made within (7) days of your lesson will be charged a 20% processing fee. All other cancellations will be charged a 10% processing fee. There are ZERO EXCEPTIONS to this policy and surf lesson registrations serve as your consent and agreement to this cancellation policy. If you think that your vacation plans could change, we strongly suggest purchasing the cancellation insurance, which allows you to cancel penalty free up until 12pm on the day before your lesson for any reason. Cancellation Insurance will only cover the assigned surfer(s) who opted-in for the insurance coverage and must be added at time of registration.

Surf lessons will still take place in the event of a light rain (which is a magical experience). We will reschedule if conditions are unsafe for any reason. This includes, but is not limited to: rough surf, lightning and/or high winds. Weather cancellations are the sole discretion of EcoVentures management.

Each class, both group and private, are 60 minutes long.

All lessons take place at The Cove Beach in Cape May. You can use 60 Beach Ave, Cape May NJ 08204 for navigation purposes and more details will be provided in your confirmation.

Yes. Surfboards and leashes are included.

We strongly recommend booking early, especially during peak summer weeks in Cape May. Our surf lessons frequently sell out.

Yes, for individuals and small groups. Surfers in private lessons have their own personal instructor(s).

Beginner-friendly for all fitness levels.

Yes. Group surf lessons are a fun and social way to learn while still receiving professional guidance. We use multiple instructors to teach groups and have a 1-to-3 instructor-to-surfer ratio.

Yes - right on the street. Most streets near our location have metered parking, however meters do not turn on until 10am in-season. Most surfers are off the beach before needed to pay the meters.

Yes—almost everyone does. We have a 98% success rate, with the vast majority of students standing up and riding waves during their first lesson. As Cape May’s longest-running surf instruction program, we’ve refined our teaching approach to help beginners succeed quickly and safely.

Yes - our sister company, Southend Surf Shop, is just a short walk from the lesson location. You can stop into the shop to rent a board or book your rentals directly online. Many of our instructors work at the surf shop and are happy to help.

Definitely, however tipping is not required and totally up to you. Our instructors work incredibly hard long before and after each surf lesson, and they always appreciate the thought.
